UCSD Extension Panel Discussion: Is Beer In Your Career?

Tomme and peers talk beer & careers!

Bottled & Kegged: San Diego’s Craft Brew Culture

“Is Beer in Your Career?”

What are the career opportunities in San Diego’s burgeoning brewing industry? Job seekers will learn the answers from a panel of experts who will converse about why San Diego has become such a nationally renowned region for craft beer production and where the professional brewing industry is headed. The panel discussion is being captured for broadcast by UCTV Career Channel as part of the opening of the San Diego History Center exhibition Bottled & Kegged: San Diego’s Craft Brew Culture, which explores the ebb and flow of beer production in the San Diego region. The exhibit features many hands-on interactive elements that help explain: the brewing process, how San Diego County brewers achieve such expansive flavor profiles, and the science behind matching beers with food.

In May of 2005 they opened their second brewery in Scripps Ranch. They currently distribute five of our favorite beers, Yellowtail Pale Ale, Calico Amber Ale , Big Eye I.P.A., Black Marlin Porter and Wahoo Wheat Beer to a thirsty San Diego. First keg of Stone Pale Ale sold on July 26, 1996 to Vince Marsaglia of Pizza Port fame. Arrogant Bastard Ale unleashed upon the world November 1, 1997. Moved to current facility in Escondido, CA, in December 2005. Opened the adjacent Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in November 2006. Named “All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by BeerAdvocate magazine in 2008…AND 2009! “The most popular and highest rated brewery – ever!”

Chris White, White Labs Inc.: Pure Yeast and Fermentation was founded by UC San Diego alumni Chris White in 1995. He and Lisa White, his ex-wife, run the company from the San Diego headquarters location. Team members have been active in the American and worldwide craft brewing movements since the 1980s. The company, which has grown to include offices in California and Colorado, provides a wealth of services to not only brewers but also winemakers, distillers and others in the fermentation business.
